Money and work-related stress left a 21-year-old young woman unable to walk or talk due to a rare neurological condition, which doctors say she may never recover from.
According to news reports, Londoner Dani Cooper had been feeling anxious about her finances for months before she became paralyzed lost the use of her legs, and was rushed to hospital. Doctors say Dani’s ordeal began when she arrived home from work one day feeling dizzy and nauseated. However, she dismissed the signs as just tiredness.
However, slowly, the fit, young woman found herself struggling to walk to the kitchen and went to the emergency ward in a hospital where her symptoms were dismissed as a migraine made worse by being on her period. The following morning, the former support worker woke up having lost the ability to speak or move.
Diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder
After that, extensive tests were conducted, and Dani was finally diagnosed with functional neurological disorder or FND - a condition that causes problems with the brain sending and receiving information. According to her doctors, financial and work-related stress triggered by the cost of living crisis were the main reasons behind her situation.
Dani said she had been struggling to afford even food and lodging because of high rentals.
Even though her speech returned within a week, she still struggles to walk and uses a wheelchair to commute. "I had been worrying for a long time about money. I had to choose between food or petrol to get to work - the cost of living crisis hit me hard. I fell into a deep depression at one point, crying every day and it most likely triggered the condition,” said Dani, who is no longer able to go to work. "FND is like when a computer has too many tabs open, and it crashes. My brain shut down and stopped communicating with my body. My life changed overnight,” she told The Sun.
What is a functional neurological disorder?
According to experts, FND is not caused by a disease or injury. For reasons not understood, the neurological system does not work properly and causes extreme weakness, paralysis of the limbs, recurrent seizures, tremors and jerks, and other nervous system symptoms.
Doctors say FND is uncommon in children under the age of 10 years. Before 50, it is more likely to occur in women and after that, it affects both men and women equally. While the cause of FND is unclear, this condition and its symptoms are real. It causes serious distress and cannot be turned on and off at will.
