Cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeon Dr. Sriram Nene, married to actor Madhuri Dixit, revealed an 18-kilogram weight loss and a significant drop in body fat percentage by making lifestyle changes.
According to Dr. Nene, investing in your health and making positive lifestyle changes can help you achieve the transformation that you seek.
How did Dr. Nene lose weight?
In an interview, Dr. Nene revealed that at the beginning of this year, he started going for regular checkups and found all his basic numbers had shot up. And that is when he brought in the much-needed diet and lifestyle changes, like turning vegan and completely staying off alcohol.
“They asked me how you're going to lead if you can't follow. I changed it around…about 9 or 10 months ago, I switched it up. I went vegan; I stopped drinking,” he revealed during an interview with INK Talks.
“Along the way, we dropped 18 kilos. We went down to 16 per cent body fat… So far, we have been pretty successful. Our goal is that by my next birthday, I am trying to get down to 12 to 15 percent body fat, as I am shooting for a magazine,” Dr. Nene added.
Does a vegan diet work for weight loss?
Vegans do not eat meat, fish, eggs, or dairy products. Instead, they eat things like fresh fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, as well as plant-based milk, other non-dairy products, and meat alternatives.
Although some people choose the vegan lifestyle out of ethical concerns for animals, the diet itself has many health benefits, including sustainable weight loss. In a vegan diet, you need to focus on nutrient-dense foods along with empty calories. For vegans, these foods would include things like:
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Whole grains
Beans and legumes
Nuts and seeds
Limit or avoid vegan processed foods that contain these added ingredients:
Fats
Sugars
Starches
Sodium
Food additives
However, according to experts, you need to be particular about your protein intake, which should be around 0.41 grams per kg of your body weight. When you break this down into calories, there are about four per gram of protein.
With vegan meals, it is also important to time your meals to boost your metabolism and promote healthy eating habits. In general, try eating meals at the same time each day to get your mind and stomach into a predictable pattern.
Munch on a larger breakfast in comparison to the other meals in your day. This may mean shifting your lunch a bit earlier and eating a smaller dinner. If you’ve exercised, try eating within 45 minutes of finishing. This will help feed and repair your muscles.
