Lizzo is keeping it real when it comes to her weight loss journey—and fans are here for it. The Grammy-winning singer took to TikTok Live recently and opened up about the lifestyle changes she’s made since 2023. Her goal? Feeling healthier, inside and out. Since starting her journey, Lizzo says she’s lowered her body mass index (BMI) by 10.5 points and dropped 16 per cent of her body fat. But for her, it’s not about the numbers on the scale—it’s about taking care of herself.
Talking to her followers, Lizzo said she started by paying close attention to what she eats, especially first thing in the morning. “I avoid sugary stuff in the morning,” she explained. “I’m super savoury.” But when she does crave something sweet, she keeps it balanced—like almond butter on toast.
Her main takeaway? Everyone’s body is different. “Find out what works for you,” she said. But there’s one thing she believes applies to everyone: “Calories in versus calories out. That’s just how the human body works.”
The Power of a Calorie Deficit
That’s the basis of a calorie deficit—eating fewer calories than you burn. It’s one of the most widely recommended and scientifically backed ways to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way. Lizzo said she started focusing on this because she was prone to binge eating and needed a structure that worked for her.
Interestingly, she also cut back on coffee—not just for calories, but for her mental health. At one point, Lizzo said she was drinking two or three large Starbucks drinks a day. When she did the math, she realised those could add up to 1,200 calories. “I stopped drinking coffee to help regulate my nervous system,” she shared.
Lizzo made it clear she’s not a fan of obsessively counting every calorie—but she sees calorie tracking as a helpful tool. “I use it to fight against the American food system,” she said, pointing out how processed and calorie-dense many everyday foods have become.
Mindful Eating and Mental Health Go Hand-in-Hand
One of the biggest lessons from Lizzo’s journey is that weight loss isn’t just about food—it’s about your mindset. Eating mindfully means being aware of what you’re putting into your body, understanding your cravings, and choosing foods that make you feel good, not just full.
Cutting back where it counts—like high-sugar drinks or heavily processed meals—can lead to small but powerful changes. For example, switching from sugary coffee drinks to herbal tea or reducing takeout meals can make a big difference over time. These aren’t drastic changes, but they add up.
And then there’s the mental health piece. Lizzo has talked openly about how anxiety has impacted her habits, and how regulating her nervous system helped her gain control over her eating. When you manage stress better, you're less likely to turn to emotional eating or bingeing.
Experts agree that combining mindful eating with mental well-being is a smart and sustainable path to weight loss. It’s not about quick fixes or extreme dieting—it’s about being kind to your body and making intentional choices that support long-term health.
