Coldplay’s singer and songwriter Chris Martin has shared a deeply personal message about his ongoing battle with depression, offering fans an intimate look into his mental health struggles and the methods that help him cope. In a heartfelt video posted to Instagram, recorded backstage after a concert in Hong Kong, Martin opened up about his experiences with emotional lows and his journey toward healing.
“Hi, this is Chris from the band Coldplay. We’re in Hong Kong... I’ve noticed that some people lately, including myself, are struggling a little bit with depression,” Martin said in the video. “So I wanted to talk to you about some things that are helping me on tour and in life in general, in the hope that they can help you as well.”
The Grammy-winning artist then detailed several coping mechanisms that have supported him, including lesser-known practices like freeform writing, where one writes down their thoughts continuously for 12 minutes and then burns the paper—a symbolic release of emotional weight.
Another technique Martin swears by is transcendental meditation, which he described as “really wonderful,” helping him find peace amidst the chaos of touring and fame. He also mentioned proprioception, a form of mindful body movement aimed at restoring mental balance.
Martin highlighted the work of Jim Costello, specifically the Costello Method, which he said is particularly effective for young people navigating conditions like ADHD or autism. Additionally, he recommended psychedelic therapy music and the sounds of artist Jon Hopkins as sources of emotional release.
Among other helpful tools, Martin listed a book called The Oxygen Advantage, which focuses on breathing techniques to enhance mental and physical well-being. He also spoke about how watching uplifting movies like Sing Sing and listening to emerging musicians like Chloe Qisha help him stay grounded and happy.
“These are some of the things that help me stay grateful and happy to be alive,” Martin said, before closing his message with warmth: “I send you lots of love.”
Recognising the Signs of Depression
Chris Martin’s openness is helping shed light on a condition that affects millions worldwide. Depression can often go unnoticed, especially in high-functioning individuals, but early signs may include:
Persistent sadness or low mood
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
Changes in appetite or weight
Sleep disturbances (insomnia or oversleeping)
Fatigue or low energy
Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
Difficulty concentrating
Withdrawal from social activities
Unexplained physical aches and pains
If left unaddressed, depression can significantly impact quality of life. Recognising these symptoms early and seeking help is crucial.
Healthy Ways to Cope
In addition to the strategies Martin shared, mental health experts recommend other coping tools, including:
Regular exercise to boost endorphins
Talking to a therapist or counsellor
Maintaining a healthy diet and sleep routine
Spending time with loved ones
Limiting social media use
Practising gratitude journaling
