Like everyone else in their late 20s, Georgie Swallow from London had extreme stress and constant tiredness. And like most young people, she ignored the signs for the longest time, till she was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

Apart from her fatigue and dwindling mental health, Georgie also did not take seriously her constant itchy legs, night sweats, and belly pain, assuming they were just lifestyle issues. “I would itch until I broke the skin, which would keep me up all night. I went to the doctor, and they thought it could be stress, allergies or urticaria, but no cream or lifestyle change would make it go,” she told Surrey Live.

“During this time, I was losing weight, having night sweats, constantly exhausted, and a never-ending stream of colds and flu, but I just thought I was on the go too much and wearing myself out,” Georgie added.

However, a proper test and detailed examination diagnosed her with cancer. Georgie's diagnosis meant she had to undergo a punishing course of treatment. “My treatment was very aggressive as I was stage 4,” she explained.

After her diagnosis, Georgie underwent four different types of chemotherapy every two weeks, which left her weak and with a lot of side effects—she lost hair, weight, and strength. She then underwent a stem cell transplant that put her into menopause at the age of 28.

However, now at the age of 32, Georgie is raising awareness for others who may be going through the same thing and that there is help out there if you know where to look.

Also known as Hodgkin's disease, the condition is a group of blood cancers that usually develop in your lymphatic system and are considered to be acquired genetic disorders. Doctors say the condition happens when genes inside certain cells mutate or change.

While Hodgkin lymphomas are relatively rare, they are the most common cancers in young adults. Every year, more people are living longer after treatment. Most of the time, people are cured of Hodgkin lymphoma because treatment eliminates all signs and symptoms. That said, this condition sometimes comes back.

Hodgkin’s lymphomas most commonly affect the lymph nodes in your neck or your chest cavity and also develop in groups of lymph nodes under your arms, in your groin, your belly, or pelvis. Hodgkin's lymphoma happens when your B-cells or white blood cells begin to mutate or develop genetic changes.

When these cells mutate, they create abnormal cancerous cells called Reed-Sternberg cells.
