The two daughters of a 72-year-old woman from Ghaziabad made a selfless decision to donate their mother's organs after she was declared brain-dead. This generous act of organ donation saved the lives of three critically ill patients in urgent need of transplants.
The woman, a resident of Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, was rushed to the Emergency Department of Max Super Speciality Hospital in Vaishali in an unconscious state two days ago. Doctors diagnosed her with a massive brain haemorrhage, and despite their best efforts, she was declared brain-dead after a thorough evaluation by a team of specialists, including neurologists, intensivists, pulmonologists, and cardiologists.
In the face of this tragedy, the hospital's medical team approached the patient’s family with the option of organ donation. Understanding the impact of this decision, the family agreed to donate their mother's organs, offering a gift of life to those waiting for transplants.
The organs included a liver and two kidneys that were being successfully transplanted. The liver was allocated to a 51-year-old male patient who had been battling chronic liver disease (CLD), while one kidney was transplanted into a 43-year-old woman suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). The second kidney was transported through a Green Corridor to PSRI Hospital, where it was successfully transplanted into another patient.
The transplant surgeries were carried out at Max Super Speciality Hospital, led by Dr Subhash Gupta, Chairman of Liver Transplant and Biliary Sciences, and Dr Rajesh Dey, Associate Director of the department for liver transplant. The kidney transplants were performed by Dr Anant Kumar, Chairman of Urology Renal Transplant and Robotics, and Dr Neeru P. Aggarwal, Principal Director of Nephrology.
Why Is It Important To Donate Organs?
Organ donation is a life-saving act that holds the potential to transform the lives of people suffering from life-threatening conditions. Every year, thousands of people worldwide wait for an organ transplant, but the supply of organs remains limited. Donating organs after death or as a living donor can provide a second chance at life for patients suffering from organ failure or disease.
The importance of organ donation lies in its ability to save multiple lives. Organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs can be donated to individuals whose organs have failed due to disease, injury, or genetic disorders. A single donor can save or enhance the lives of up to eight people, depending on the organs donated.
