Donald Trump Weight Loss:Donald Trump won the US Presidential election against Kamala Harris in a landslide victory on November 6. Trump’s massive victory is going beyond the campaign as people are noticing his 20 lbs weight loss. But how did he do it? Speculations suggest that he has joined the bandwagon where he is taking support of weight loss drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy, but some say it was just stress. So what is it? Let’s check!
Earlier in January Trump opened up about his drastic weight loss journey where he blames stress for losing 20 lbs (9kgs) during this campaign. He opened up in a media interaction with Fox News where he mentioned that he lost weight ‘The hard way.’ “I've been so busy I haven't been able to eat very much. I'm not able to sit down and eat like a person like you - you can sit down and eat. Me, it's a little bit tougher,” he said.
Though the 47th US President skipped meals and didn’t pay much attention to his health, this is not the right approach to lose weight. Losing weight during stress has become very common these days as we tend to prioritise work over our health. Some people tend to lose weight when stressed, some gain weight when stressed. But how and why does this happen? We got in touch with some mental health experts who explain possible reasons behind it.
“There is an intriguing connection between stress, weight loss and mind-body dynamics. Donald Trump's weight loss during his electoral campaign is a prime example of how stress can impact our physical health. When we're under pressure, our body responds by releasing cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol in the bloodstream leads to changes in metabolism, appetite, and overall physical well-being. However, it's essential to acknowledge that everyone's response to stress is unique,” shares Shubhra S Khurana, Psychologist and Founder of White Apples, a mental health startup.
“Some may experience weight loss, while others may gain weight. There are also quite a few other factors that begin to influence weight like a person’s predisposition and genetic makeup, one’s approach to competitive work settings, global market volatility, and continuous personal demands that he/she places on the self,” she further explains.
Dr Gorav Gupta, Senior Psychiatrist and CEO, Tulasi Healthcare shares that “Some people experience weight loss from stress as their appetite, metabolism, or energy levels change. In such people stress activates the "fight or flight" response, where the brain releases the adrenaline hormone, which subdues the desire to eat momentarily. Stress also boosts metabolism, burns calories faster. In others, stress triggers gastrointestinal disorders and anxiety, which doesn’t make them feel the need to have their food. As a result, their body burns calories more than before or even incurs decreased intake that finally results in weight loss over time.”
While stress may result in weight loss for some, for others, it is likely to lead to weight gain. Dr Geeta Shroff, Co-Founder, Lighthouse Counselling Center shares that “When a person's body feels under pressure due to stress, a certain hormone called cortisol may be released; this hormone stimulates the appetite and hunger for high-calorie sugary foods, which are usually stored as fat around one's abdomen. Furthermore, stress leads to disturbed sleep patterns, reduced energy levels, and a lack of motivation to exercise, all of which add to weight gain. As a result, stress responders instead start gaining weight through comfort foods or stop exercising as they are fully out of their routines.”
